Tortoise op catches 300 drink drivers

In just five days over Easter, police in NSW attended more than 340 major crashes and two fatal accidents but officers say they're generally pleased with driver behaviour.

More than 300 drunk drivers were caught during Operation Tortoise, while in excess of 6400 speeding tickets were also handed out.

Despite more people being tested, the number of drink drivers is lower than last year.

"There has been a marked improvement in driver behaviour over the holiday weekend but the challenge for motorists now is to continue with that careful and courteous driving in the weeks and months ahead," Assistant Commissioner John Hartley said on Tuesday.

Two people were killed on the state's roads over the long weekend.

A man died in a head-on collision between two heavy vehicles on the Riverina Highway near Deniliquin on Thursday morning, while a 44-year-old woman died when two cars collided in Dundee on Monday afternoon.
