Time has run out for deputy mayor Salim Mehajer's embattled western Sydney council, which is facing the sack.

Auburn City Council was last month given 14 days to explain why it should not be suspended after the NSW government announced a public inquiry into the council.

The deadline for that period ends on Friday.

During an emergency meeting last week, councillors voted to formally argue against being suspended but failed to discuss why they should avoid the sack.

The inquiry is investigating allegations that some councillors misused their position to benefit themselves or their relatives.

If the council is stood down, it could spell the end of the political career of Auburn's controversial deputy mayor Salim Mehajer.

Mr Mehajer was last week slapped with a four-month suspension from public office, for failing to declare all of his financial interests.

The council is also one of several NSW councils facing amalgamation later this year.
