A 15-year-old girl has been repeatedly punched in the face on a Sydney train in what police have described as a racially motivated attack.

Police said the girl and two friends boarded a train at Blacktown Railway Station on Monday aftermoon.

A woman boarded the same carriage with a group at Parramatta and became involved in an argument with the 15-year-old after accusing the girl of making a racist comment.

Police have been told that the woman grabbed the teenager, pulled her hair and punched her in the face several times while shouting racial abuse, before getting off the train at Lidcombe.

The teenager wasn't seriously injured.

Police have asked anyone who saw the attack to come forward.
