Sydney stadium overhaul gathers steam

Sydney's great stadia overhaul is starting to gather steam, with the NSW government calling on expressions of interest to rebuild Parramatta Stadium.

The 30,000 seat rectangular venue is set to be constructed on the site of the 30-year-old stadium.

NSW Sport Minister Stuart Ayres insists cleanskins need not apply, with applications only to be accepted from those with proven track records in stadium design.

Planning approvals for the project will be split into two stages: demolition and masterplan works, and design and construction of the new facility.

The successful contractor will be responsible for clearing the second planning hurdle.

Club members, supporters and community members will be able to have their say on the plans in coming months.

The contract to design and construct the new stadium will be awarded later this year, with the facility expected to open in 2019.

The government also plans to refurbish the stadium at Moore Park and upgrade ANZ Stadium, after walking away from its plans to demolish Allianz Stadium.
