Sydney soccer fan charged over flares

A soccer fan has been charged after more than 50 flares were allegedly discovered before a Western Sydney Wanderers and Melbourne Victory match.

Police say the 25-year-old man's vehicle had been parked illegally in Marsden Street before Tuesday night's game in Parramatta.

During a search of the vehicle, police say they found two boxes with more than 50 marine flares about 7pm.

The man was taken to Parramatta police station and charged during the match, where Melbourne Victory edged out Western Sydney Wanderers 2-1 at Pirtek Stadium.

The 25-year-old was fined for the parking infringement and charged with possessing a non-firearm irritant in public and possessing bright light or distress signals in public.

He is due to appear at Parramatta Local Court on Friday, January 9.

Police have made an application to have the Baulkham Hills man banned from all Football Federation Australia affiliated matches.

Soccer fans have been reminded flares are prohibited from sporting events and police say they will target those who refuse to heed warnings.
