Sydney's largest soup kitchen reopens

Sydney's largest soup kitchen for the homeless will re-open in the inner-west after a month-long renovation.

Ashfield's 25-year-old restaurant, The Loaves & Fishes Free, reopens on Tuesday with a new servery, enabling more meals to be served to Sydney's disadvantaged.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott praised the restaurant's generosity in a video message recorded for the reopening.

The $130,000 renovation, funded by donations, included replacing rotting floors and leaking windows, installing an air-conditioner and giving the kitchen a modern makeover.

More than 1.8 million meals have been served in the past 25 years with 1,200 meals prepared every day.

"Each day the Loaves & Fishes restaurant provides a welcoming face, a hearty meal and a friendly conversation," Mr Abbott said.

"This simple act of generosity has the power to help people through hard times and get them back onto their feet."
