A man has been charged after another man was stabbed numerous times in the back on Sydney's northern beaches.

Officers responding to reports of an altercation found a 37-year-old man with stab wounds on Pittwatter Rd, Dee Why about 9.30pm on Friday.

A 49-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Dee Why station, where he was charged with reckless wounding and being armed with intent to commit a serious indictable offence.

He is due to face Parramatta Local Court on Saturday.
