Court tribute for ex-judge found in pool

The head of the Family Court has paid tribute to "brave" former judge Richard Gee, who died after being pulled unconscious from a backyard pool.

NSW Ambulance paramedics were called to Mr Gee's Belrose home in northeast Sydney at about 10pm on Monday, but the 83-year-old died at the scene.

The former Family Court judge and his family survived an explosion at the home in 1984, during a spate of attacks on judges and others linked to the Family Court.

Family Court Chief Justice Diana Bryant said the court's judges were saddened to hear of Mr Gee's death.

"He will be remembered as a wonderful individual and judge who provided inspirational service to the court and to the community," Justice Bryant said in a statement.

"His exemplary dedication and commitment to the court was demonstrated by his brave decision to return to work following the horrific bombing of his family home."

Police are investigating Mr Gee's death and will prepare a report for the coroner.

He is the 18th person to die from drowning or suspected drowning in NSW since Christmas Day, prompting authorities to warn the public to be careful around water.
