Sydney light rail build at cracking pace

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has visited what will be the first completed platform of Sydney's new light rail project as the government confirmed eight kilometres of track, or one-third, has now been laid.

Ms Berejiklian visited the Wansey Road platform at Randwick on Monday morning, which overlooks the Royal Randwick racecourse.

The project, which will connect Circular Quay to Randwick by 2019, had 500 metres of track laid at the beginning of the year and now has eight kilometres down.

"We are really cracking the pace on the project," Ms Berejiklian said.

Parts of George Street near Circular Quay are now open to traffic following track work that upset some CBD traders.
