Sydney drug bagman's sentence reduced

A confessed drug bagman has had six months wiped off his jail sentence after pointing out the disparity between his penalty and that handed to the kingpin of the operation.

Dong Pei Wang was last year sentenced in Sydney's Downing Centre District Court to 12 years behind bars with a non-parole period of eight years and six months over his role in a methamphetamine deal.

He was caught in an undercover police sting that initially unfolded in the car park of a Krispy Kreme store.

The 52-year-old received a discount on sentence of 25 per cent thanks to his early guilty pleas.

But the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal on Friday found his sentence was unduly harsh compared with that of the drug operation's "principal", Wenping He, and resentenced Wang to an aggregate sentence of imprisonment of 11 years and six months, with a non-parole period of seven years and nine months.

Wenping He had been sentenced to 16 years with a non-parole period of 10 years 6 months.

"In my opinion, the applicant (Wang) has a justifiable sense of grievance and should be resentenced," Justice Derek Price wrote in a judgment handed down on Friday.

"Nevertheless, given the objective gravity of the applicant's offending and the statutory guideposts of the applicable maximum sentences and non-parole periods, the scope for reduction in the applicant's sentence is limited."

Wang will become eligible for parole on August 12, 2021.
