Sydney derby fans behave as passions flare

There's a cool breeze outside Sydney's Allianz stadium but the atmosphere is heating up as fans march and chant their way into the Sydney FC and Wanderers clash.

A bulked-up police presence has ensured die-hard fans have mostly behaved ahead of the anticipated match on Saturday night.

It didn't stop one Western Sydney Wanderers (WSW) fans, who has been kicked out, screaming at police that they are "a disgrace to the uniform".

Families entering he stadium have told AAP they feel safe and are excited, rather than scared, by the fiery displays from the teams' two ultra fan groups.

"It's not as violent or scary as anyone makes it," Mary Ismail, 37, told AAP as she walked into the game with her family.

WSW fan Chris Bettiol, 40, said misbehaving fans were a distraction and they didn't stop him from bringing his 10-year-old son.

"It's just a minority who come to the games to cause havoc," he told AAP.

"It shouldn't take away from the families coming to watch the game."
