A Sydney cyclist is in a serious condition in hospital after falling off his bike in the city's north during peak hour.

Police say the 45-year-old man from Manly Vale lost control of his bike and fell off as he was riding downhill just after crossing the Spit Bridge near Mosman on Wednesday morning.

He sustained head injuries and has been taken to hospital in a serious condition.
