Surfers have been called out of the water at Sydney's Bondi Beach after a shark spotting.

The shark alarm was raised around 3.30pm on Thursday, Waverley Council said.

Swimmers have not been let back into the water, as the shark may still be in the bay.

Life guards do not patrol the beach after 5pm in winter, and with night approaching they have told people not to go back into the water, a council spokeswoman said.
