Major search resuming for paraglider suspected to have crashed in Wollongong

A massive search operation in Wollongong will resume this morning for a missing paraglider who crash landed in the water, approximately 200 metres offshore.

Emergency services were called to Woonona Beach at 2pm, however, despite searches conducted on foot, sea and air so far nobody has been found.

The search was suspended at 5pm, with the multi-agency approach to resume at 8am today.

A helicopter was used to drop a green dye into the water, which is a fluorescent dye that helps rescuers see more clearly and also tracks the currents in the water.

A jetski and rescue boat also surveyed the area, but police say they were unable to find the missing person.

A severe weather warning remains in place for Wollongong, with the potential for hazardous surf conditions.

The news comes just months after a similar incident, also in Wollongong.

In December, a man crashed into a tree and became suspended above the ground near Stanwell Tops, resulting in multiple rescue resources having to be deployed to rescue him.
