RFS volunteer dies battling NSW blaze

A volunteer firefighter has died of a suspected heart attack while battling a blaze on the NSW South Coast.

The Rural Fire Service firie suffered a suspected heart attack on Sunday afternoon while he was extinguishing a vehicle fire at a camp ground in the remote Deua National Park, 100km from Bateman's Bay.

The man was given medical assistance by colleagues and ambulance officers but was not able to be revived, the RFS said.

NSW Emergency Services Minister David Elliott said he was deeply saddened by the firefighter's death.

In a statement on Monday Mr Elliott praised volunteers as the heart and soul of the community and extended his sympathies to the man's family.
