Regions trump metro: NSW crime statistics

The latest NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research report shows regional towns continue to bear the brunt of assaults and robberies across the state.

Here's five quick facts from the research which compared crimes recorded over the last 24 months to September 2016:

* The regional towns of Coonamble, Moree Plains and Wellington recorded more than double the state average for at least 11 criminal offences including domestic violence and break and enters.

* The rates of someone stealing from a person dropped 8.1 per cent in Sydney, but it's still more than 11 times more likely for someone to commit the offence in the city than anywhere else.

* The suburbs with the highest murder rates were in Sydney's southwest: Six were in Bankstown while Fairfield and Liverpool recorded four each.

* Tumut Shire, in the South West Slopes region, recorded a whopping 200 per cent rise in break and enter dwelling offences.

* Robbery with a firearm is 5.7 times the state average in Orange. The electorate is now represented in the NSW parliament by a Shooters Fishers and Farmers MP following a November by-election.
