A man and a woman are in custody following the high-speed chase of an allegedly stolen car from Mittagong in NSW's Southern Highlands to Merrylands in western Sydney.

Police say that early on Saturday officers tried to stop a car going at 131km/h on the Hume Motorway at Mittagong but it failed to stop and in the ensuing chase it reached speeds of 180km/h.

It's further alleged that items were thrown from the car and the driver drove towards a police officer standing near a police vehicle, narrowly avoiding him.

At Merrylands the pair ran from the vehicle but were arrested nearby.

A 33-year-old man has been charged with failing to stop, speeding, driving dangerously, using a weapon to prevent lawful detention, resisting police and possessing suspected stolen items.

A 38-year-old woman has been charged with intentionally throwing an object at a vehicle risking safety, throwing a missile at a police officer and possessing a prohibited drug and suspected stolen items.

Both were refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court on Sunday.
