A NSW woman has been indecently assaulted by an intruder who broke into her house while she slept.

Police say the 22-year-old was sleeping in her Dubbo home, in central west NSW, when she was awoken about 3.20am by the sound of her front door being opened.

"The woman locked the open door and a short time later was confronted by a man who appears to have entered through the bedroom window," NSW Police said in a statement.

The man, wearing shorts and joggers with a white shirt covering his face, demanded money before indecently assaulting the woman, and punching her in the face during a scuffle.

He left on foot, police said.
