NSW to begin massive mop up following fatal storms

The mop up continues across NSW after powerful storms smashed the state's coast, leaving three men dead and many homes significantly damaged.

About 700 properties at Narrabeen were evacuated during the weekend's wild weather but on Monday evening it was deemed safe for people to return home.

Some of the worst destruction happened at the beachside suburb Collaroy, where eight-metre high waves smashed the shore causing significant erosion which led to backyards, balconies and a swimming pool slipping into the sea.

While insurers will be counting the cost of repairs, three families have been devastated with the bodies of a man from Leppington, a 65-year-old man and a 37-year-old Canberra man discovered on Monday.

The search for a man who jumped from rocks into dangerous swells at Bondi Beach is also expected to resume on Tuesday morning.

The destructive low-pressure system has moved south and a flood watch has been issued for all Tasmanian river basins.
