NSW man charged with machete attack

A man has lured two people out of their northern NSW home by cutting the power before allegedly attacking them with a machete.

The couple, a 51-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman, went to investigate the issue at their Goonellabah home, near Lismore, on Sunday night, when a 46-year-old man armed with a machete allegedly jumped them.

The 51-year-old was sliced on his face and head, while the woman was cut on the arm and wrist.

The armed man, who reportedly knew the couple, fled the scene and was located on Monday at a cemetery near Port Macquarie, about 300km from the attack, suffering from apparently self-inflicted wounds.

He was taken to hospital before being charged on Wednesday with two counts of attempted murder and malicious wounding with intent.

He was refused bail and is due to face Lismore Local Court next month.
