A prison expansion will be built at a western NSW jail to accommodate a record increase in inmates across the state.

The rapid-built expansion is set for maximum-security Wellington Correctional Centre and will feature a dormitory-style facility as part of $3.8 billion plan by the NSW government to manage the state's rising prisoner population.

Work on the prison is expected to be complete in mid-2017.
