NSW disabled children mistreated in school

The number of allegations of mistreatment of children with disabilities in NSW schools is unacceptably high, a NSW parliamentary inquiry has found.

The cross-party committee released its report on Thursday which included 39 recommendations on improving the treatment and supervision of children within the state's care, including those under the supervision of the Department of Education.

"There are so many adverse findings but the most disturbing is the fact that the policy to support children is the opposite of the reality in schools," Labor spokesman for education Jihad Dib said in a statement on Friday.

The NSW Department of Education welcomed the report.

"The department acknowledged that more needed to be done at school and administrative levels to support these students, their families and teachers," an education department spokesman said on Friday.
