Man caught riding scooter with eight-year-old not wearing helmet

A scooter rider on NSW's Central Coast has been slugged with over $1000 in fines and nine demerit points after he was allegedly caught with an eight-year-old passenger not wearing a helmet.

Police said the 43-year-old man was travelling on Manns Road, West Gosford last Friday morning, when he allegedly saw officers doing roadside breath testing up ahead and tried to evade them.

After he allegedly did a U-turn over double white lines and took off in the other direction, police caught up with him and pulled him over.

It was then they discovered the Asquith man was riding with another passenger and a small child wedged in between them.

While the man and other passenger were both looking after their own safety by wearing a helmet, the child on the scooter did not have head protection.

The man was given fines for riding with more than one passenger, riding with a passenger not wearing a helmet and riding over double lines to do a U-turn.

Each penalty is $387, totalling $1161 and three demerit points per offence.
