Shark sightings keep NSW beaches closed

Beaches in the Ballina shire on the NSW north coast will remain closed with concerns after shark sightings.

Another shark was spotted at Lighthouse Beach in Ballina on Sunday morning, according to a NSW Surf Life Saving spokeswoman.

Beaches from Lennox Head to Lighthouse Beach at Ballina were closed on Saturday and after an assessment of the area on Sunday, it was decided they will remain closed until 10am on Monday.

However nearby at Evans Head, where a surfer was attacked by a great white shark on Friday, beaches have been deemed safe and reopened on Sunday.

Airforce Beach to Chinamans Beach are open, but swimmers and surfers are advised to remain vigilant.

Former boxer Craig Ison was knocked off his board and mauled by the shark during an early-morning surf.

The 52-year-old underwent surgery for injuries to his left leg and arm at Lismore Base Hospital and was airlifted to Gold Coast Hospital on Saturday morning.
