New cameras catch train troublemakers

Covert cameras aimed at detecting troublemakers and graffiti vandals who illegally trespass on train tracks have been unveiled across the Sydney rail network.

Following the success of Mousetrap technology that is used on train carriages, Mousetrap Land Based will help security staff catch culprits who break into dangerous, fenced-off areas on the rail corridor.

NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance said on Monday the cameras will save lives by catching rail corridor trespassers in the act.

"This can be deployed anywhere, at any time. The simple message is - don't break the law or you'll be tracked down," Mr Constance said in a statement.

"We do as much as we can to keep train customers safe."

The new technology has already helped police who arrested a trespasser at Chatswood in Sydney's north and a group of youths who put rocks on a train line on the Central Coast.
