A search for a large Southern Right Whale that was supposedly trapped in nets in waters south of Sydney has been called off.

Crew from an incoming Jetstar flight notified the Westpac Surf Lifesavers on Thursday morning after spotting a whale about 11 nautical miles south of Sydney, which looked to be entangled.

Stephen Leahy, from Westpac Life Savers said the helicopter, Lifesaver 21, has completed a search in the ocean for a distressed whale.

"Crew reported all marine life are ok and `having a whale of a time'," it was tweeted afterwards.

It's a busy time in the east coast waters as whales migrate north to breed.
