Police are investigating whether a fatal stabbing in NSW's Hunter region was motivated by jealousy.

A 48-year-old man was stabbed to death at Cessnock, west of Newcastle, early on Sunday.

Police expect to soon charge a 49-year-old man who they believe was the former partner of the victim's girlfriend.

As officers examined the Edgeworth Street home where the stabbing occurred, a car driving past lost control and crashed into the crime scene.

Inside they found a man suffering multiple wounds which they suspect were self-inflicted.

Police expect to interview the man and charge him over the death after he undergoes surgery at John Hunter Hospital later on Sunday.
