A man is in hospital after an early morning shooting in Sydney's west at the same unit block where another man was allegedly kidnapped and tortured less than a fortnight ago.

At about 4.20am, emergency services were called to an apartment block on Urana Street in Villawood after reports of shots being fired.

Police found a man, believed to be aged in his 40s, suffering from a wound to his leg outside the Villawood unit.

He was treated at the scene before he was taken to Liverpool Hospital in a stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police are now investigating why the man was on the street at 4.30am.

Police and forensics spent the morning sweeping the crime scene for clues, seizing several items, including a large sum of cash.

Police were at the same apartment less than two weeks ago for a suspected kidnapping after a 29-year-old man was found inside a car boot, stabbed, burnt, and beaten after a 14-hour ordeal.

The incident is believed to be linked to gangland activity.

Police are investigating whether today's shooting is connected to the incident.

"Australia is not supposed to be like this. So I don't know what is going on, it's ridiculous," a witness said.
