A six-hour siege on the NSW Central Coast has ended with a man being shot dead by police

Police actions are now under investigation after officers attended a home on Wells Street in Springfield, near Gosford, for a welfare check just before 3.30pm yesterday.

When officers arrived, they found a 49-year-old man barricaded inside the property and armed with a screwdriver and glass shards, with a perimeter established around the property.

Officers continued to try to speak with the man, but police say he refused to cooperate.

At about 9.25pm, the man tried to burn an officer by lighting an aerosol can.

Tactical police pushed into the property before the man armed himself with a sharp object and stabbed an officer multiple times.

Police fatally shot the man. One officer received a minor injury during the incident.

"Certainly there were a number of shots fired by a number of officers as a result of that attack and the attempts to stab the officer," Assistant Commissioner David Waddell said.

The man was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

A critical incident team is now investigating the shooting.
