A man is to appear in a Sydney court charged with child sex offences that allegedly took place more than 20 years ago.

Police say the 69-year-old was extradited from Cairns on Wednesday, after Sydney police flew to Queensland, where they searched a property in the suburb of Mooroobool and arrested him.

The man allegedly sexually assaulted a six-year-old girl who had been his neighbour in Granville, western Sydney, in 1991.

He has been charged with having sexual intercourse with a person under the age of 10 and committing an act of indecency with a victim under 10 years.

He was refused bail and is scheduled to appear at Central Local Court on Thursday.
