A man has been charged with murder after allegedly stabbing his partner to death in a north-west NSW unit.

Emergency services arrived at the Armidale unit on Rockvale Road at about 2.15am, and when they arrived, they found a 48-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds.

Despite being treated by paramedics, she died at the scene.

A 53-year-old man who was at the unit was arrested and taken to Armidale Police Station, where he was later charged with murder.

Senior Constable Greg Ryan said the victim and the man were in a de-facto relationship and police are therefore treating the alleged murder as a domestic violence incident.

“The victim has been identified, and we have been in contact with her family this morning,” he said.

“Obviously, this is devastating for the family, and we will continue to support the family and community.”

The knife used in the alleged attack was also taken in for forensic examination.

“Across the state we respond to a domestic violence incident one in every three minutes so it is something police deal with regularly,” Ryan said.

“I reinforce that our focus is to respond to domestic violence and protect victims.”
