Man dies after hitting pole near Newcastle

A 59-year-old man has died after his car crashed into a power pole near Newcastle.

The man was driving his Peugeot wagon in Wakefield on Monday afternoon when he veered off the road and smashed in to a power pole, NSW Police believe.

Rescuers tried to save the man, but he died at the scene.
