Man charged for driving esky in Sydney

A man caught driving a motorised esky on the streets of southwestern Sydney has told police it was his only way of getting around after he lost his licence.

Police on Wednesday posted a picture on Facebook of a man in tracksuit pants and Adidas sports sandals standing alongside the motorised beer cooler next to a patrol car.

He was charged in Campbelltown with driving while disqualified and unregistered.

"I ride this everywhere just till I get my licence back," the man allegedly told officers.

The red esky - emblazoned with motorsport stickers - appears to be petrol-powered but police say electric-powered variants would also be illegal on the streets.

One punter called the charges "so unAustralian".

"Should be in our rights to drive an esky filled with VB, in a singlet, footy shorts and thongs with luscious mullets," he wrote on Facebook.

"Sends chills down my spine," another commented.
