A small earthquake in the NSW regional city of Lithgow has been felt by locals.

The 2.3 magnitude earthquake hit 10km southeast of Lithgow just before 10.30am on Tuesday, a Geoscience Australia spokesman told AAP.

The quake was only small and is unlikely to have caused any damage, he said.

"It was widely felt and we received about 45 reports ... people said it was like a truck ran into a building," Australian Geoscience Seismologist Dr Andrea Thom told AAP.

Lithgow has had 29 seismic events since 1900 with the largest felt in 1985 when a 4.3 magnitude quake hit the town.
