Leveson inquest to hear final submissions

As the Leveson family mark 10 years since their 20-year-old son was last seen alive, they're also preparing to make a closing submission to the long-running emotional inquest into his death.

Matthew Leveson was last seen leaving Darlinghurst's ARQ nightclub on the morning of September 23, 2007, with then-boyfriend Michael Atkins.

Last month, Atkins told police he buried his boyfriend in bushland south of Sydney after finding him dead in their bedroom, the inquest heard.

Atkins, 54, claims he found a bottle of drugs in the kitchen after discovering Mr Leveson died from what he thought he was a drug overdose in 2007.

Atkins, who in 2009 was acquitted of murdering Mr Leveson by a Supreme Court jury, led police to his remains in the Royal National Park in May after being offered immunity from perjury and contempt of court charges.

But Mr Leveson's parents don't believe Atkins' story and still consider him as their son's killer.

"Why would we accept somebody who's lied for nine and a half years that is all of a sudden is going to tell the truth," Faye Leveson said last month.

Mrs Leveson posted a tribute online this week as the family marked the 10th anniversary of her son's death.

"Matt would be so over the moon, as are we, that so many people took the time to remember him," she said.

"If we haven't thanked you personally please forgive us as we were struggling to keep up and Mark was flat out this weekend writing his closing submission for the family at the Inquest."

The inquest presided by Deputy State Coroner Elaine Truscott is set to resume next Tuesday when final submissions will be made.
