Hughes inquiry to look at player safety

Player safety, protective equipment and expert medical evidence will be examined in detail when the NSW Coroner holds a four-day hearing into the death of former Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes.

A short administrative hearing was held in Sydney on Friday morning, with the NSW Coroner hearing that the Hughes family, Cricket Australia, the SCG Trust, Ambulance NSW and NSW Police will be represented when the hearing commences on October 10.

A request was also made for the ambulance service to provide a document outlining its systems and procedures, and for expert neurological evidence to be provided months ahead of the hearing.

Media coverage of Hughes' death will also be examined, with the court hearing the family was upset by the frequent broadcast of the fatal incident.

The inquest comes after the former Test batsman was struck on the side of the head by a short-pitched delivery at the Sydney Cricket Ground while at the crease for South Australia in a Sheffield Shield match against NSW on November 25, 2014.

The 25-year-old never regained consciousness after the blow and died two days later.

Hughes played 26 Tests and 25 one-day internationals.
