How to beef up NSW greyhounds welfare

GREYHOUND INDUSTRY REFORM PANEL'S KEY RECOMMENDATIONS

* Set up an independent integrity body, which can obtain and use evidence from covert surveillance, to oversee the industry

* Split Greyhound Racing NSW to separate commercial and regulatory functions

* Greyhounds to be registered and tracked for their entire lives

* Mandatory life bans for live baiting or other serious animal cruelty offences

* Greyhounds euthanised only if a vet determines it's in the dog's best interests

* Better track safety standards, including more straight track racing and reduced field sizes

* Restrictions on keeping small animals on properties with greyhounds

* Accreditation scheme for owners, breeders, rearers, educators and trainers

* Extra government funding to help employ more compliance inspectors

* Statutory review of new regime by mid-2020
