Early morning commuters in Sydney and NSW north coast have battled heavy rain getting to work on Thursday.

The weather bureau has warnings in place with damaging surf the main concern. Average swells of 6m and peaks of 9m are predicted in some areas.

NSW SES received more than 150 calls overnight for help, including rescuing a driver after a tree fell on a car in Coffs Harbour.

But there is good news for those who battled the weather to get to work, with conditions around Sydney and inland areas set to ease Thursday afternoon.

"Sunny days ahead for inland areas," a bureau of meteorology spokesman told AAP.
