Nearly 8000 hectares of land in Sydney's southwest will be released by the state government to help the city's housing crisis.

Planning Minister Rob Stokes announced on Tuesday that 7,700 hectares south of Campbelltown would be used to create new communities at Menangle Park, Mount Gilead and Wilton Junction.

The government's plan for the Macarthur region involves building 35,000 new homes, schools, public transport and road upgrades.
