A four-year-old boy has been airlifted to a Sydney hospital with a serious arm injury after becoming trapped on an escalator on NSW's Central Coast.

The boy was at a shopping centre in Tuggerah on Sunday afternoon when he reportedly continued to hold the handrail at the end of the escalator, with his arm becoming trapped in the return chute, according to CareFlight.

The boy's father was also reported to have suffered unspecified injuries attempting to free him. Both were treated at the scene and flown to Westmead Children's Hospital.
