An elderly man is dead after his car crashed into a guard rail, then another car and finally a power pole on the NSW north coast.

The 89-year-old died while being taken to hospital following the smash on the Pacific Highway at Tyndale shortly before midday on Thursday.

His 87-year-old female passenger was taken to hospital with possible arm and leg fractures.

The two people in the second car were not hurt.

In a separate incident on Thursday night, a 55-year-old woman had to be extricated from her car after it crashed down a 40-metre embankment into thick bush at Marsfield in Sydney.

An 11-year-old girl in the car was able to free herself.
