Drug in NSW jail mail from 'Covert St'

Prison officers have found a banned drug hidden in a greeting card with a return address of "Covert Street, Beverly Hills", Corrective Services NSW says.

Officers at Wellington Correctional Centre in the state's Central West found forty tabs of buprenorphine - a prescription heroin-replacement - hidden within the cardboard of a "Happy Daisies" card while searching mail sent to a female inmate.

The card said: "I love you with all my heart and soul. I hope these flowers remind you of good times. I miss you every day and I can't wait to hold you."

"Given the ridiculous return address, this was a pretty foolish - and far from covert - attempt to smuggle drugs into our prison," the facility's governor Louise Smith said in a statement on Friday.

Corrective Services says there were about 100 incidents in 2018 where contraband was found in mail sent to inmates - with buprenorphine strips the most common item seized.
