Heavy snow leaves dozens stranded near Sydney

Dozens of sightseers have been rescued after becoming stranded by heavy snow near the Jenolan Caves in NSW.

About 80 people were stuck in the area in freezing temperatures on Monday evening after poor weather stranded 14 vehicles, including seven buses.

A State Emergency Services spokesman said the weather had improved slightly and some of those people had been able to drive out.

"There were still a few vehicles bogged but those people have been taken to a halfway house where they're being looked after," he said.

A number of the drivers were 'caught by surprise' by the snow and some of the vehicles slid into a ditch.

No one was injured and the SES said by about 11pm the snow had stopped and turned to sleet and rain.

"We're hopeful that with those improved weather conditions the road should reopen overnight."
