An injured abseiler has spent the night trapped on a rock ledge in a northwest NSW national park after he plunged 15m down a cliff.

The 21-year-old was abseiling with four friends in the Warrumbungle National Park on Sunday afternoon when he fell and suffered a head injury and possibly lost consciousness, a Westpac Rescue Helicopter spokesman said on Monday.

Two paramedics have abseiled down to the man, who is stranded with one of his mates about 60m from the top of the cliff and 160m from the ground, and will line haul him to the top where he can be airlifted to hospital.
