Car winched from Sydney embankment

A driver has been rescued from his car after it plunged over the edge of an embankment on Sydney's northern beaches and threatened to fall onto a house below.

Fire crews stabilised the car that was wedged in a "difficult position" after it went off the embankment at Grandview Drive in Newport on Tuesday morning.

NSW Fire & Rescue told AAP the male driver was released by officers before the car was winched up from the embankment and towed away.

The driver was treated for minor injuries by paramedics at the scene.
