A boy has died after being hit by his dad's ute in the driveway of the family home in the NSW Riverina region, with police describing the accident as "absolutely gut-wrenching".

The seven-year-old is likely to have run behind his father's reversing vehicle when he was struck in Temora on Sunday afternoon, police say.

Paramedics tried to revive the boy but he died at the scene.

NSW Police Chief Inspector Robert Vergano said police are treating the incident as an "absolutely gut-wrenching and terrible tragedy".

"It appears the seven-year-old may have ran behind the vehicle while it was reversing," Insp Vergano told reporters on Monday.

The 35-year-old father has undergone mandatory blood and urine testing as police continue their investigation.

The family was "extremely shaken" and the Temora community, with its population of about 4500, was "not travelling too well", Insp Vergano said.

"The family of the boy are too distressed, suffering from extreme shock," a police spokeswoman told AAP earlier on Monday.

The incident was a sad reminder for drivers to take care around children, Insp Vergano said.
