Bondi footbridge's future in the air as council meets after mass shooting

The future of the Bondi Beach footbridge from which alleged gunmen Sajid and Naveed Akram took the lives of 15 people in the December 14 terror attack will be debated in a special council meeting this week.
The northern footbridge at Bondi Park formed the vantage point from which the alleged killers carried out the shooting attack on a Chanukah ceremony.
Now, it has been put on the agenda of an extraordinary meeting of Waverley Council tomorrow night, which noted in the agenda that both the northern and southern footbridges at the park were "reaching the end of their useful life and require replacement within several years".

Both bridges are heritage-listed.
The agenda also said the potential replacement of the northern bridge "may form part of a future discussion of a permanent memorial".
If the mayoral minute is carried, the council will ask officials to prepare a report on the cost, timetable, and approvals process for a replacement or restoration of both bridges.

Tomorrow night's meeting will not settle the future of the bridges, but decree whether further assessment will be taken.
The council also noted that any establishment of a permanent memorial would be in conjunction with the state government, the Jewish community, the people of Waverley, and the victims' families.
"Council acknowledges that there are many beautiful ideas, but this consultation process will take time," the meeting agenda reads.

In the meantime, the council will discuss opening the Bondi Beach Sea Wall to artists for memorial murals.
If the minute is supported, artists will be selected through an expression of interest process.
