The body of a father swept away in the NSW Shoalhaven River while trying to rescue his children has been found.

The man's two children were floating on an inflatable mattress near a campground at Coolendel, west of Nowra, when they got into difficulty about 10am on Saturday.

The 38-year-old, from Corrimal in the Illawarra region, managed to save one child but was swept away trying to save the second, who was rescued by nearby canoeists.

Search teams found the man's body near Coolendel about 6.10am on Monday, police said.

The body hasn't been formally identified but police believe it to be that of the 38-year-old father.
