Baird boosts spend on big-ticket events

The Baird government will pump an additional $73 million into attracting big-ticket sporting and cultural events to NSW.

The state has hosted Major League Baseball and soccer giants Manchester United and Juventus in recent years, but Mr Baird says more investment is needed.

"We won't stop until Sydney is the undisputed major events capital of Australia," he said in a statement on Sunday.

He also pledged an additional $40 million to regional tourism and $9.5 million to drawing more foreign tourists.

The government wants to double the money tourists spend in NSW over the next five years.

Opposition Leader Luke Foley scoffed at Mr Baird's plan, telling reporters "a game of gridiron" was little compensation for the sale of state electricity assets.

Mr Baird will take his plan to lease 49 per cent of the electricity distribution network to the March 28 election, claiming it will raise $20 billion to be spent on infrastructure.

Mr Foley has proposed a tax cut on the horse racing industry in a bid to help NSW compete with major Victorian racing carnivals.
