Backburning covers Sydney in smoke

Backburning operations in the Blue Mountains have shrouded Sydney in a thick layer of smoke this morning.

Cool temperatures overnight meant the smoke settled over the city rather than dispersing into the atmosphere.

The Rural Fire Service has said the smoke should clear throughout the morning.

The hazard reduction burns took place in Katoomba, Wentworth Falls, Springwood, Blackheath and various other places through the Blue Mountains.

Other parts of the state also have backburning operations scheduled for this week.
